GRDC Scholarship Investment Review
Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC)
2025
This scoping project delivered a comprehensive review of scholarship and leadership investments across the Australian agricultural sector, with a focus on the Australian grains industry. It was undertaken to inform GRDC’s future scholarship investment portfolio, benchmark existing programs, and identify strategic opportunities for alignment, scale and impact.
Summary
To support innovation and long-term resilience in the Australian grains industry, this project scoped the national scholarship landscape across undergraduate, postgraduate and leadership programs. We conducted in-depth interviews with eight research and development corporations (RDCs) and major scholarship providers and analysed government and industry data on scholarship offerings, funding levels and workforce demand. Our review identified 104 distinct scholarship programs, all facing demand that exceeds supply. With projections of over 43,000 grain-sector job vacancies by 2030, we recommend increasing GRDC’s scholarship allocation through multi-year funding, strategic co-investments, targeted first-year and vocational bursaries, and robust evaluation and alumni engagement. These measures will strengthen talent pipelines and secure a skilled workforce for the future of the Australian grain industry.
